Artist Statement
The primary focus of my artistic practice examines the relationship between constructed architectural spaces and our common experiences and encounters within them. I am interested in exploring how repetitive patterns in planning and design ultimately become subconscious cues for social conduct.
Through an amplification or shift in the primary function of an initial design, my work reconsiders utility in both object and place as it challenges perception and interaction within public space.
Biography
Born in Vancouver in 1968 and raised in the rural suburb of Port Coquitlam, Reece Terris is now a practicing artist living and working in Vancouver, Canada. Through his experience in the construction industry both here and abroad, Terris developed strong interests in the conceptual meanings of private and public space. Drawn to both architecture and visual art, he made the choice to follow a fine arts degree which allowed more experimental possibilities for three-dimensional work. While earning a BFA at Simon Fraser University in Visual Art, he actively maintained both his construction business and his exhibition practice. His works span a variety of media, including sculpture, performance, installation, and photography, but all share a critical relation between objects and spaces.
Terris' work has been exhibited throughout Canada and the United States.
